SANDPOINT — A Sandpoint man arrested last week following a standoff with local and federal law enforcement is expected to appear in court later this month on felony domestic violence charges.
Nathan Taylor McDaniels, 42, was arrested on felony charges of domestic battery and attempted strangulation stemming from an alleged incident in November 2025.
McDaniels is being held at the Bonner County Jail on a $100,000 bond and is expected to appear in court Jan. 28 for a preliminary hearing. At the hearing, prosecutors will present evidence to determine whether sufficient probable cause exists for the case to proceed to trial.
According to court documents, officers became aware of the alleged abuse after responding to the victim’s residence, where they observed lacerations and bruising on her face and neck. Documents allege McDaniels struck the woman multiple times in the head and attempted to strangle the woman to the point of “not being able to breathe for a second.”
Court documents also state the woman admitted to slapping McDaniels before the alleged abuse.
Officers later contacted McDaniels regarding the incident, during which he told them he did not want to press charges but agreed to come in for questioning. When he failed to appear, law enforcement obtained a warrant for his arrest.
On Jan. 12, Sandpoint police officials located McDaniels near Cedar Street in Sandpoint, where he barricaded himself inside an apartment for approximately four hours. Law enforcement noted in a press release that there were indications of McDaniels having a weapon, prompting a standoff response involving the Sandpoint police, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals, who worked to coax him out of the apartment.
Following the four-hour standoff, McDaniels was taken into custody without incident, according to the police department’s statement.
At the time of his arrest, McDaniels had two outstanding warrants for battery and grand theft. The grand theft charges stem from an October 2022 conviction.
