Michael 'Mike' A. Zagar, 79

Michael “Mike” A. Zagar, 79 of Hayden, Idaho, died peacefully at home Dec. 29, 2025. He was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where he attended Michigan Tech University. He married his second wife, Valerie Lorimer Zagar, in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1988.

Mike was a civil engineer who loved traveling and the outdoors, especially hiking the trails of Idaho and Washington. He led the “Thorsday” hiking group for many years and belonged to the Nordic Panhandle Club.

He is survived by his spouse, Valerie, and several cousins scattered across the United States.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 625 E. Haycraft Ave., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. A reception/gathering will follow at Yates Funeral Home Hayden Gathering Center, 373 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden, Idaho.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Park Foundation (www.nationalparks.org) or a nature-oriented charity of your choice.
