PREP BASKETBALL: St. Maries boys run away from Bonners in second half

ST. MARIES — Senior Jack Barta had 18 points and five steals, and the 3A St. Maries Lumberjacks pulled away in the second half to beat the two-time defending state 4A champion Bonners Ferry Badgers 79-48 on Tuesday night. 

Barta hit three straight 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for St. Maries (10-1), which outscored Bonners (6-6) 29-9 in the final quarter after leading by just three points at halftime. 

“We just got going, started making some 3s in transition, and got out and got some layups,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We might have wore ‘em out a little bit in the fourth.” 

JJ Yearout had 15 of his 17 points in the second half for St. Maries, and he also had 11 rebounds and eight assists. Isaiah Gustaffe had 10 points, five steals and four assists, and Xavier Sloper had 16 points and four rebounds. 

“Xavier just had a solid four quarters,” Chase said. “He stepped in and took some charges; he did all the dirty work tonight.” 

Ty Schrock scored 17 points, Sulay Abubakari 12, Peyton Hinthorn 11 for Bonners Ferry. 

St. Maries, winners of 10 straight, travels to Orofino on Saturday in a battle for first place in the Central Idaho League.

LEWISTON — The visiting Hawks struggled through a nine-point first half en route the loss to the defending district champion Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play. 

Brayden Carrel finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for Lakeland (7-5, 2-1 5A IEL). 

Royce Fisher scored 27 points for Lewiston (12-2, 2-0), which moved into first place. 

Lakeland returns to action Friday at the Nike Extravaganza XXXI at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif. The Hawks play Capistrano Valley Christian at 3 p.m. 

Lakeland coach Caleb De Fabiis formerly played and coached at nearby Colony High in Ontario, Calif., before taking the Lakeland job in 2024. 

"It will be a nice little homecoming," De Fabiis said. "Will be a great experience for our boys as well."

SPIRIT LAKE — The Tigers hung with the Wolfpack of Spokane for a half, trailing by nine points, before the visitors outscored Timberlake 26-13 in third quarter of the nonleague game. 

Junior guard Isaac Williams made four of his six 3-pointers in the third quarter, and finished with 26 points for North Central (10-5). 

“We did a good job in first half keeping them off the 3-point line,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “The second half they heated up; we didn’t have an answer for Williams. Our nine-point halftime deficit grew quickly.” 

Max Simpson had 18 points and eight rebounds for Timberlake (3-8), which committed 24 turnovers.  

"It’s hard to win games against anyone when you give up that many extra possessions,” Henry said. 

Brant Rush added 12 points for Timberlake, which plays host to Grangeville on Friday.

WALLACE — Senior Draeden Taylor had 14 points and six rebounds and junior Evan Vindasius scored 14 points each for the Wildcats in a nonleague win over the Miners at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Senior Cayden Honnerlaw had 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Kellogg (6-6), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Thursday. 

“The guys did a really good job tonight,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “A lot of our stuff came in transition tonight. We really ratcheted up our pressure in the second half. Wallace did a good job of getting us to play at their speed early on.” 

Junior Emmitt Myles scored seven points for Wallace (6-6), which hosts Lakeside on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Macy Murphey hit seven of her school record nine 3-pointers in the first half, finishing with 31 points for the Tigers in a nonleague win over the Wolfpack at Timberlake High. 

Murphey tied the previous record of seven held by Malia Miller, Lilly Kelley and Taryn Soumas in Saturday’s Backwoods Brawl spirit game at Bonners Ferry. 

Miller played four possessions before hyperextending her knee and not returning on Tuesday. 

“We’re still hoping to get whole,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, who was also without Shea Jones, wo was out sick. “We were hoping by Friday that we’d be at full strength, but not I’m not so sure.” 

Senior Payton Young scored 16 points for Timberlake (9-5), which hosts Lapwai on Thursday, then hosts Grangeville on Friday. 

Arkayla Brown scored 14 points for North Central (4-11).

Cate, who surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career earlier this year, surpassed 1,000 career rebounds on Tuesday and now has 1,010. Junior Belle Jordan had 15 points and 12 rebounds for North Idaho Christian (7-10), which travels to Pullman Christian on Thursday.
