Arthur Wingate cut down a dead larch for firewood and was surprised that a flying squirrel leapt out of it, its home ruined. Flying squirrels are primarily nocturnal so seeing one was unusual. Editor Mel Ruder dashed over to his house to get pictures and they remarked it looked like a flying beaver.

Photos by Dale Burk would be displayed at the Bank of Columbia Falls. Burk would go on to be a champion of the Great Bear Wilderness and his book “Great Bear, Wild River” is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the wilderness.

Residents in the Canyon were opposed to top-down planning and wanted to wait until Highway 2 was completed before any formal land use plans were made. Still, commercial use was figured in as a good use along Highway 2 through Hungry Horse and Coram, much like it is today. A petition with 1,121 signatures opposed the ban on snowmobiling in Glacier National Park. The ban still stands today.

A citywide street assessment tax was shot down by the Columbia Falls City Council after about 40 members of the public complained that they didn’t want anymore taxes. The local economy was poor at the time.

Jan. 18, 1996
Taggert Schubert, 26, a seasonal Glacier National Park employee, died after he fell while descending Mount Jackson in Glacier National Park. A climbing companion went for help, as Schubert survived about 10 hours bundled in his sleeping bag, but he died before help could arrive. Schubert was a naturalist at Goat Haunt.

Two people were killed up the North Fork after a massive avalanche slid off the Mountain and crashed into Red Meadow Lake. The avalanche was so forceful it threw fish from the lake up onto the ice. Killed were Danielle Bloom and Chris Schmalz of Kalispell, but rescuers were able to find Dan Kenfield who was upside down in the snow, but still alive.

Columbia Falls graduation rate was just under 80%, lagging behind the rest of the state.
