Law roundup: Background check amounts to discrimination, says would-be tenant

Upset at finding out that prospective landlords had performed a background check on him that turned up some unsavory information, an apartment hunter called the Kalispell Police Department, claiming discrimination. He said the review revealed he was a violent offender and reiterated his displeasure with the "old hags" who managed the property. After learning that this sort of thing was more a civil matter than criminal, the man thanked them for their time. He would be getting an attorney, he said.
An employee reported the theft of license plates from an SUV. The authorities later recovered the plates and returned them to the original owner.
Someone called the police with questions about a permit for chickens.
Security personnel called in the police after finding three unclaimed bags containing adult toys and paraphernalia, including at least two needles. Officers took care of the needles for them.

After a coworker reported seeing a woman slumped over in a silver SUV for about an hour, an employee phoned the police. It turned out the woman had fallen asleep while reading a book.
Accusing a protester of violating flag code, a passerby phoned the authorities. They said the protester had the flag upside down and let it touch the ground, which is "against the law." Officers explained the difference between the flag code and criminal conduct.
Seeing a neighbor leave an outside storage area with a couple of rims, a resident began to suspect she had gone through their belongings. The resident told the police they believed the rims were stolen, at the very least. Also, they thought she was using methamphetamine.
