South Boundary Fire Department seeks volunteers for new community auxiliary

The South Boundary Fire Protection District has launched a new community auxiliary aimed at easing the workload on its all-volunteer firefighters while increasing opportunities for community involvement.

District firefighters handle far more than emergency responses, according to Cori Vandecoevering, firefighter and public information officer for the department. In addition to calls for emergency service, volunteers are responsible for training, equipment upkeep, building and grounds maintenance, fundraising efforts and community events.

“That’s a lot for people who already have full-time jobs and families,” Vandecoevering said. “Everyone here is a volunteer except for the chief’s position.”

The newly formed auxiliary was created to help support those non-emergency responsibilities and allow firefighters to focus more of their time on training and response. Some of the things auxiliary members may possibly assist with are fundraising, community events, public outreach and engagement, and other support roles. Firefighting experience is not required to be a part of the auxiliary.

“There is a place in the auxiliary for everyone,” Vandecoevering said. “Everyone has something to offer.”

Auxiliary volunteers may help with tasks such as event setup and cleanup, crafting or baking for fundraisers, grant research, administrative and clerical support, public education and outreach, and donation coordination. The auxiliary will also help make it possible to host events that previously could not move forward due to limited staffing, including potential car washes and additional fundraisers.

The auxiliary will work in conjunction with the firefighters’ association, which operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and oversees fundraising for the department. Membership in the association is limited to active firefighters, while auxiliary volunteers will support those efforts without being required to serve as firefighters.

South Boundary Fire Protection District hosts several events throughout the year, including Community Appreciation/Safety Day, the Holiday Festival, pancake breakfasts, scholarship raffles and the Christmas tree sale. Funds raised are used to support both departmental needs and the community.

Auxiliary volunteers will initially attend quarterly firefighters’ association meetings, with the possibility of moving to monthly meetings if interest is strong. The next association meeting is scheduled for April.

In addition to the new auxiliary, the department is always seeking volunteers for both firefighting and non-firefighting support roles.

“Even things like rehab support. There are people that come in and bring waters and get food.” said Michael Vandecoevering, fire chief.

Community members interested in learning more about the auxiliary or volunteering may email [email protected] or call the fire station at 208-267-8052.
