KELLOGG — The Kellogg City Council recently passed a resolution honoring the Kellogg Police Department and all law enforcement agencies for their quick response to the Dec. 26 shooting in Wallace. 

Resolution 2026-01 recognizes the swift actions of officers from Kellogg and surrounding jurisdictions, crediting their coordinated efforts after a gunman opened fire in downtown Wallace and injured three people, including Kellogg Police Officer Dameon Groves. 

Officers and deputies from KPD, the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Police, and other surrounding agencies secured the scene and prevented further harm. 

The city of Kellogg commends their bravery, professionalism, and coordinated response, credits their efforts for protecting the public and expresses full support for the recovery of the injured. The resolution also acknowledges the work of emergency services and investigative teams and reaffirms the city’s ongoing commitment to community safety. 

Following the resolution’s signing, Councilmember Terry Douglas offered words of support. 

“We need to make sure each and every officer knows how much we appreciate everything they do for our communities,” he said. “We wanted to take a few moments and this resolution to show you.” 

According to Kellogg Police Chief Paul Twidt, KPD was the first agency to respond. KPD Officer Matthew Weingart exchanged gunfire with the shooter outside the SCSO before the gunman retreated inside the building. 

Groves, along with Twidt, assisted in locating the shooter inside the SCSO and narrowly avoided being shot before being struck by a piece of glass from the shattered lobby window penetrated by a bullet. 

Groves was hailed as a hero by Sheriff William Eddy during the press conference immediately following the event. 

“I just couldn’t be more proud of my guys,” Twidt said. “They’re pretty badass.” 

Twidt also credited Kellogg Mayor Rod Plank and the City Council for their support. 

“We’re proud of all of you,” Plank said. “We’re lucky to have you.”
