PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lakeside clinches Scenic Idaho Conference title

WALLACE — Senior Tyson Charley scored 17 points, eight in the third quarter, and the Lakeside Knights clinched the Scenic Idaho Conference championship with a 58-42 win over the Wallace Miners at Kirby Krulitz Court on Saturday. 

Senior Hallah Peone scored 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter for Lakeside (13-1, 5-0 SIC), which travels to Timberlake on Tuesday. Teagan Brown also scored 12 points for the Knights, and Furyus Louie added 11.

"Team was little lethargic today after a tough game against Prairie (a 68-53 Lakeside win Friday night in Plummer)," said Lakeside coach James Twoteeth, whose team won its fifth straight. "Happy to clinch league; hoping we hit our stride at right time for state."

Sophomore Lennox Radford scored 14 points for Wallace (6-7, 2-2), which travels to Kootenai on Monday.

OROFINO — The visiting Lumberjacks saw their lead in the Central Idaho League go away — and their 10-game winning streak come to an end — with the loss to the Maniacs, who took over first place. 

Junior Blake Barlow hit all three of his 3-pointers and scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter for Orofino (10-2, 4-1 CIL). 

“He seemed to take the game over,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “I felt like we were contesting shots, and fighting through screens; we just couldn't seem to get stops when we needed to.” 

JJ Yearout had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for St. Maries (10-2, 3-1). Jaxson Harold had five points and five rebounds off the bench for the Lumberjacks, who were just 5 of 24 from 3-point range. 

St. Maries gets another shot at Orofino on Feb. 17 at home, five days after visiting third-place Kellogg (7-7, 2-2). 

"We still have a chance to control our own destiny if we win out, but we’re going to have to play,” Chase said. 

St. Maries travels to Kendrick on Friday.

SPIRIT LAKE — The visiting Cougars of Kalispell, Mont., led by 20 points at halftime, then outscored the Tigers 34-9 in the third quarter. 

Ryan Buzzard scored 23 points, Micah Strobel 17 for Stillwater Christian (13-2), which had four players in double figures. 

“That was the best all-around basketball team we have faced all season,” Timberlake coach Juston Henry said. “Every kid that stepped on the court made it difficult for us.” 

Sophomore Billy Vallieres scored 11 points for Timberlake (4-9), which plays host to Lakeside on Tuesday.

KELLOGG — Junior Porter Lewis scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the first half and added four assists and four steals for the Wildcats in a Central Idaho League win over the Bulldogs at Andrews Gymnasium. 

“Porter was a big beneficiary of us being able to turn them over and speed them up in the first half,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “He really got us off to a quick start and was really doing stuff all over the court tonight.” 

Junior Ty Cheney scored 14 points, 10 in the third quarter, for Kellogg (7-7, 2-2 CIL), which hosts Priest River on Thursday. 

“Everything just really came to him tonight,” Martin said. “He didn’t force anything and really had a good night for us.” 

Sophomore Bear Wilcoxon scored 14 points for Grangeville (1-11, 1-4).
