Lawyer, Rice lead Trotters by Lions

Simple basketball math really.

Double doubles can beat multiple single doubles or single singles any day. Home or away.

And if you have two double doubles working for you, like Plains Trotter coach Brooks Sanford happens to often have in Ava Lawyer and Hadyn Rice, well, that should mean getting the W most times out.

The formula added up perfectly in Eureka Saturday night as the Trotters stopped the Lady Lions 51-35 in District 7B action with Lawyer counting 18 points and 12 rebounds and Rice registering 17 points and 10 more rebounds to lead Plains to the win.

Now 2-2 in loop play and 4-5 overall, the Trotters return to action this week with a non-conference game versus Hot Springs in Plains Tuesday and another 7B counter at Troy Thursday.

Sanford was happy with and happy for his Trotters in retrospect.

“I thought it was a great conference win on the road,” he said. “We had several players banged up pretty good after our game in Mission so to take that long road trip to Eureka and will out a win the next day showed a lot of character.”

Sanford was also referring to the Trotters’ other game last week, a 66-32 road loss in Mission the night before to the District 7B leading Lady Bullodgs.

Back to the win in Eureka, Stanford pointed out several factors pushing the outcome Plains’ way. “Ava was strong at the point and had to look for her own shot a little more last night,” he said Sunday. “Hadyn was strong in the post again despite regularly drawing two or three defenders.”

Sanford also praised the efforts of Katelyn Subatch for her clutch play and scoring, Jaycee Carr for her fine defense and hitting a big 3-pointer at a key point in the game, and Taryn Meredith for grabbing some key rebounds and making a couple of big buckets.

Kassy French added seven points for Plains, Merdith four and Carr three.

Scoring for Eureka was not available.

Against Mission, Rice scored a game-high 22 points to pace the Trotters, Lawyer scored five, Subatch four and Meredith one.

Sheadon Kain scored 20 points, Brooklyn McClure 12 and Cora Matt 11 for Mission, which improved to 3-1 in 7B play and 10-1 overall with the win.
