The Whitefish Duals on Jan. 23 proved to be no challenge for the Columbia Falls boys wrestling team. The squad delivered their strongest performance this season with several wrestlers dominating their matches and coming out on top throughout the event.
“Overall, it was a great evening of wrestling. The highlight of the evening for me was we were able to put a JV dual together with Browning JV and wrestle them in a dual format. It’s been a long time since I have seen two teams able to put together a JV dual team in the Class A division. It was nice to see those young individuals experience that and come out victorious,” said coach Jessie Schaeffer.
Steamrolling their way through their competitions in decisive fashion were Brander Christianson (103 lbs.), Kolbe Cronk (132 lbs.), Trenton York (128 lbs.), Fisher Whitaker (144 lbs.), Kale Schaeffer (150 lbs.), and Blaise Cronk (165 lbs.).
“Charlie Borcherding, who is a new wrestler for us, experienced his first win of the season which is always a great experience/memory for the athlete and the coaches. All in all, we wrestled well as a squad and hope this momentum continues into the remainder of our season,” said Schaeffer.
Girls See Limited Action
Only four other teams attended the duals in Whitefish, which meant there were just a handful of matches available for several athletes in the competition.
“We have very little mat time in Whitefish. Kind of a disappointment on the girls’ side of things. We worked really hard just to get everyone a match.
“Low numbers on the girl’s side limited the number of matches that were wrestled. The girls did a great job trusting the coaching staff on matches that were not in their respective weight classes,” said coach Ben Schaeffer.
During the duals, Teigan LaTray (110 lbs.) and Isabella Aguilar (115 lbs.) both dominated their matchups, securing impressive victories in their respective weight classes.
Both teams will be on the road again as they head to Butte this upcoming weekend for the Class A Duals.
