PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Fast start helps Coeur d'Alene down Lakeland
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 2 months AGO
RATHDRUM — In a battle of the top teams in the Inland Empire League, this round went to the 6A school.
Junior Brookeslee Colvin scored 20 of her game-high 32 points in the first half for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in a 75-64 win over the Lakeland Hawks at Hawk Court on Tuesday.
Colvin finished with six 3-pointers, hitting three in the first half as the Vikings stretched a 22-18 lead after the first quarter to 39-22 at halftime.
“I want to give a lot of credit to my assistant coaches,” Coeur d’Alene coach Stacy Boyd said. “They watch game film before every matchup and they did a great job of scouting Lakeland. I felt like we did a good job of interrupting their offensive game plan, and we did an excellent job locking in defensively.”
Both Coeur d’Alene (6A IEL) and Lakeland (5A IEL) clinched league titles with wins on Saturday.
Junior Presley Fagan scored 22 points for Lakeland (15-4), which concludes the regular season on Friday at home against Lewiston.
“We lost momentum and made mental errors in the second quarter, and they took advantage of it,” Lakeland coach Caelyn Caufield said. “Our girls responded after halftime with grit and determination and never stopped competing. It’s another game we’ll learn and grow from.”
Freshman Payton Brown scored 14 points and sophomore Lexie Wheeler added 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (19-2), which is off until the first game of a best-of-3 6A District 1 championship series on Feb. 10 at Coeur d’Alene High.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Boyd said. “We shot the ball well, and we were able to take advantage of the open looks they gave us. Lakeland is a really good team with lots of depth and they are well coached. This was a good win before we prepare for districts and continue to build off this.”
