Jan. 29, 1976 – POLICE CHIEF SWORN IN 

Laurence F. Sterling’s appointment to head the Sandpoint police department became official Tuesday, when Mayor Les Brown administered the oath of office in a city council executive session. In that session, the council turned down, at least for now, a requested salary increase for city firemen.

COURSE FOR BABYSITTERS SET 

If you are a babysitter or someone who would like to start babysitting who could use some helpful hints, a babysitting workshop sponsored by the Extension Service is just for you. The six two-hour Saturday morning sessions will be held at Sandpoint  Community Hall. Instructors will be Susan Gohs, home economist; Carol Pietsch, home economics teacher; Sydne Van Horne, nurse; Dave Pemberton, deputy sheriff; and Wade Brown, fire chief. Certificates will be presented to those who complete the course. There is no charge for the instruction and anyone in the county is welcome.

EMBROIDERY CLASS OFFERED 

Linda Plaster will be giving a series of lessons in crewel embroidery next month at The Hobby Shop, owned by Dick and Glenda Laird. The series will consist of six two-hour lessons, starting the first week of February. Materials will be included in the cost of the lessons. Those interested in signing up should call The Hobby Shop at 263-3312.

Jan. 29, 1951 – FARMIN GROUP MEETS 

Farmin P.T.A. met Monday with an interesting program. Music by the stringed choir under the direction of Mrs. Marian Ruyle opened the evening. Dorenamae Bates introduced fifth grade science students, who exhibited their pets: Bobby DeGroot – turtle; Terry McKenney – hamster; Roye Drinkard – chameleon; Bobby Roe – bantam hen; and Deena McFarland, who told of her horse. Diane Sanders introduced sixth graders who told of their hobbies: Felix Rogers – electric train; Dale Selle – gold fish collection; Laurel Roe – needlework; and Sharon Wilkinson – a collection of miniature animals. Speaker of the evening was Hardy Lyons. Fifth graders won the award for having the most parents present. The second grade served refreshments.

MRS. GRESHAM HONORED 

A surprise welcome party was given Mrs. C.W. [Oeta] Gresham Monday when a group of women from First Baptist church went to her home on North Boyer to visit her. The Greshams lived at Midas many years, recently moving to Sandpoint. The afternoon was spent playing games, after which Mrs. Gresham opened many lovely gifts. Those attending were the Mesdames Ivan Brown, Mary Kitchen, Christine Shierry, Helga Robertson, Gerald Mott, Clint Stuffing, Ora Beasley, [Mary] Wellington, Dutch Kohlman, Ida LaMoreaux, Edna McArthur, Roy McArthur, Frank Harrell, Ralph Chicks, Frank Albee, Roger Kane and Alvin Colomb.
