PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint girls erase 18-point deficit, down Lake City for special senior night win

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 29, 2026 1:00 AM

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sandpoint 54, Lake City 47

SANDPOINT — A sluggish start wasn't going to deter Sandpoint from grabbing a 6A/5A Inland Empire League win for their seniors.

Junior Brecken Mire stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists — all team-high's — and came away with three steals, junior Jordyn Tomco worked her second-half magic and recorded 14 points, including a 3-pointer, and had two steals and two assists, and the Lady Bulldogs erased a 34-16 early third quarter deficit to defeat the Lady Timberwolves on Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Senior Jasmin Laing scored six points, sophomore Willow Betz four points, and junior Livia Driggs recorded four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Sandpoint, which trailed 29-15 at halftime before closing the third quarter on an 18-5 run. Down 39-34 to start the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs used a 9-0 run, which included a mid-range floater and a triple from Tomco, to take a 43-39 lead. Tomco then hit two more buckets to keep the lead at 47-44 before Sandpoint closed out the fourth quarter with a 20-8 scoring advantage.

The main difference between the two halves was Sandpoint's ability to drive the lane and capitalize on their opportunities from the charity stripe, which were frequent.

"Going 15 of 18 tonight was pretty awesome," Sandpoint High head coach Madi Schoening said of her team's efforts from the free throw line. "When we were 0-for-13 from the 3-point line at halftime, I told the girls that if it wasn't falling, we were going to need to find offense somewhere else. In the second half, they definitely did that, driving hard to get to the rim and to the line, and that was the game changer. We just got into a better flow in the second half."

Schoening also noted that her team's tenacity on defense in the second half made up for the early offensive struggles.

"Huge kudos to the girls for fighting through hard times," coach Schoening added. "Our tenacity on defense is something we talked about at the beginning of the third quarter — picking it up, changing the tempo, and making them work for their steps down the floor — and doing that totally changed the trajectory of the game."

Juniors Carly Laybourne, Jaylah Butler, and Summer Loutzenhiser all had two points apiece and played valuable minutes. Along with Laing, seniors Mia Driggs and Jetta Thaete were honored during senior night celebrations for their contributions over the years. Loutzenhiser, academically a senior, was also honored.

"What a unique and cool group we've put together, including our two managers who have been with us for a long time and just pour their heart and soul into the team... showing up every day to practice, cheering the girls on, and doing the hard parts of the game most people don't get to see," coach Schoening said. "Those six carried the leadership tonight, and every night, so just proud of them and happy to have them."

Ella Pearson had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and hit three 3-pointers for Lake City, which is now 7-11 on the season.

Sandpoint (15-4) is idle until Tuesday, when they'll travel to Lewiston for their 5A Inland Empire League and regular season finale.
