Multidisciplinary concert explores shared language of visual, musical art

As Chorale Coeur d'Alene continues its 25th year serving the Inland Northwest, the ensemble recently presented "Elements of Design: A Treat for the Eyes and Ears," a multidisciplinary concert experience exploring the common language shared by visual and performing artists.
Held Jan. 15 at the Art Spirit Gallery, the event brought together featured soloists from the Chorale and a specially curated visual exhibition designed in direct conversation with the music. The gallery created interpretive “stations” throughout the space, each focused on one of seven foundational elements of design: line, shape, form, value, color, texture and space.
The program was intentionally structured to invite active engagement. Audience members listened to musical selections highlighting a particular element of design, then explored corresponding visual works during breaks, allowing sound and sight to inform one another throughout the evening.
The collaboration took place during a meaningful moment for Art Spirit Gallery, which recently announced it will close after 30 years in downtown Coeur d’Alene. Long recognized for its role in supporting artists and enriching the cultural life of the city, the gallery’s partnership with the Chorale reflected a shared commitment to thoughtful, community-centered arts experiences.
For Chorale Coeur d’Alene, the evening served as both an artistic exploration and a moment of gratitude.
“A collaboration like this felt deeply fitting during our 25th year,” Chorale Coeur d'Alene Artistic Director Joshua Chism said in a Jan. 21 news release. “It reminded us that music does not exist in isolation. It lives alongside visual art, shared spaces and the people who gather to experience it together.”
"Elements of Design: A Treat for the Eyes and Ears" reflected the spirit of Chorale Coeur d’Alene’s 2026 season, a milestone year focused on honoring artistic legacy while continuing to explore meaningful connections between music, community, and creativity — work that will carry forward into performances and projects yet to come.
