PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Whittaker comes up clutch for Coeur d'Alene in OT
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 3 months, 3 weeks AGO
SANDPOINT — Junior Davis Whittaker scored six of Coeur d’Alene’s seven points in overtime, including the go-ahead free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining, as the Vikings beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 76-75 on Thursday night at Les Rogers Court.
Whittaker hit a 3-pointer early in overtime to give Coeur d’Alene (6-11) a one-point lead, then knifed his way to the hoop for a bucket to put the Vikings up 75-72 with less than 2 minutes left.
After Sandpoint (7-8) tied it at 75 on a free throw by Logan Roos with 15 seconds left, Whittaker rebounded a missed Coeur d’Alene shot, got fouled and hit the first of two free throws. He missed the second, but time ran out before the Bulldogs could put up a desperation heave.
“He made a few plays,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kent Leiss said. “Hitting that 3 was clutch, and getting that offensive rebound was awesome.”
Senior Caden Symons scored 14 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter for Coeur d’Alene. Whittaker finished with 17 points, and senior Alex McCall added 12.
Symons put Coeur d’Alene up 69-68 with two free throws with 6.3 seconds left in regulation. Roos was fouled at the hoop with .7 seconds left, and hit the second of two free throws to force overtime.
“I talked to (Sandpoint coach) Will Love afterward, and we both agreed that was one of the best high school basketball games we’ve ever been a part of,” Leiss said.
Roos and Tyler Weisz each finished with 14 points for Sandpoint. Brock Yarbrough added 13 points, Derrick Chamberlain 12 for the Bulldogs.
Coeur d’Alene had lost six straight, though two each were to Lake City and Post Falls, and the other two were to western Washington schools Lake Washington and Bothell.
“Proud of the guys for refusing to lose, because that’s what they did,” Leiss said.
Coeur d’Alene returns to action Tuesday at home vs. Lewiston.
