The Idaho Governor’s Office and the Idaho Attorney General’s Office have released their 2025 annual report on the prosecution of child sexual abuse in Idaho, showing an increase in reported incidents statewide.
According to the report, reported incidents of child sexual abuse rose 16.51% from fiscal year 2024, totaling 889 incidents — 126 more than the previous year. Additionally, prosecutors filed 1,232 child sexual abuse-related cases, a 2.83% decrease from last fiscal year.
“These figures show that child sexual abuse remains a significant and ongoing concern throughout the state. The increase in reported incidents indicates that suspected abuse is being identified and brought to the attention of authorities more frequently, while the number of cases filed reflects a consistent prosecutorial response,” said Gov. Brad Little and Attorney General Raúl Labrador in a press release. “Even with a slight year-over-year decline in filings, the overall volume of cases remains substantial, underscoring the enduring demands placed on law enforcement, prosecutors and victim-support systems.”
Of the 1,010 adult offender cases filed, 196 originated in Idaho’s First Judicial District, which includes Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Benewah and Shoshone counties. Among the 222 juvenile offender cases, 29 came from District 1, with the most frequently filed charge being Idaho Code18-1508, lewd conduct with a minor.
The report is compiled of data submitted by each county’s prosecuting attorney, the administrative offices of the courts and the commission on pardons and parole to break down sexual abuse charges and the disposition of each case. For reporting purposes, child sexual abuse cases refer to charges of injury to child, sexual abuse of a minor under 16, possession of sexually exploitative materials, lewd conduct of a minor under 16, sexual battery of a minor under 16 and enticing of children over the internet.
Bonner County accounted for 35 filed cases — 32 involving adults and three involving juveniles. Ranked as the ninth most populous county in Idaho, Bonner County also ranked ninth in the number of filed child sexual abuse cases. The counties with the highest number of cases were Bonneville County with 182 and Kootenai County with 157.
Disposition data was also included in the report, noting that 552 of the adult cases are currently pending, as of June 30, 2025. 157 of the cases resulted in a prison sentence, with 263 cases dismissed, 14 received a retained jurisdiction, 22 received probation and two were acquitted.
Cases are often dismissed due to insufficient evidence or procedural errors. If cases are dismissed without prejudice, the prosecutor can refile the case at a later date.
Of the 222 juvenile cases, 103 are pending as of June 30, 2025. 69 cases were given probation, 46 were dismissed and 4 resulted in juvenile corrections.
The report also dissected current inmates who were granted parole or discharged for completing sentences of statutory sexual offenses involving children. 326 inmates across the state were granted parole, with 204 being discharged upon completion of their sentences. Twenty-three of those came from Bonner County.
Among the Bonner County releases, five residents were discharged on injury to child charges, two on sexual abuse of a minor under 16, two on possession of sexually exploitative materials and two on lewd conduct with a minor under 16. One individual was released on probation for an injury to child charge.
