Gary Alton Stephenson passed away from complications from ALS on May 18, 2026, in Tucson, surrounded by family. He is leaving behind a rich legacy of love, family and a life beautifully built.
Born on June 21, 1945, in Sutter, Calif., to Alton and Cathilea Stephenson, Gary grew up with a natural ability for problem-solving and a strong drive to create. Throughout his life, Gary was a master of many trades, but his proudest professional achievement was earning his general contractor’s license. He was a true craftsman who took immense pride in building anything from houses and furniture to delicate jewelry. He could build or fix absolutely anything — a talent his family took full advantage of! His hugs were the best and made you feel safe and that everything would be alright.
Gary’s entrepreneurial spirit was matched only by his love for adventure. On Sept. 20, 1980, he married the love of his life, Lesley. Together, they embarked on a 46-year journey filled with excitement, change and shared dreams. Over nearly five decades, Gary and Lesley lived in 40 different homes and owned at least 10 businesses (truth be told, the family lost track of the exact number somewhere along the way). His and Lesley’s favorite spot was Maui.
While he was a successful builder and businessman, Gary’s greatest accomplishment was always his family. He was a pillar of quiet strength who didn't always say much, but when he did, it was meaningful and people listened.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Lesley; his children, Traci, Denise Cornell (Tom), Richard (Cari), Kristie Mitchell (Holly), and Casey Yetter (Luke). He was the proud grandfather of Catie (Felicia), Rachel (Jordan), Rhyan (Noah), Josh (Mariah), Shelby, TC (Jasmine), Zachary, Jacob and Rhylee, and became a great-grandfather to five. He also leaves behind his first wife, Jean; his niece, Stephanie Gore; his nephew, Trent Teesdale; and many dear friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Cathilea; his brothers, Robert and Lamar; his sister, Joan; and his beloved son, Sean, who passed away in 1992 and with whom Gary is now peacefully reunited.
Gary’s physical presence in our lives will be deeply missed, but his steady heart and enduring legacy live on in each of us. He was profoundly loved, and he will never be forgotten.
A celebration of his life will be planned later this summer in North Idaho.
