LEGION ROUNDUP: Lakers can't keep pace in Monday night shootouts

SANDPOINT — The North Idaho Lakers 16U couldn't contain two powerful offenses in back-to-back losses on Monday evening.
Lewiston 14, North Idaho 3
SANDPOINT — A stellar day at the plate from Priest River rising junior Karsen Garvin wasn't enough to lift North Idaho over Lewiston in the first game of the Lakers' doubleheader.
Garvin knocked in the first of the Lakers' three runs in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-1. A groundout from Drake Burk quickly drove in the second run, briefly giving North Idaho their first and only lead of the game.
Despite the lopsided final score, the Lakers continued to battle well into this game. On the mound, Garvin would allow only two more runs over the next three innings, giving up the lead but keeping the game in the reach of the Lakers' offense.
A single from Cody Gutierrez ignited a third-inning rally, which featured Garvin driving in his second run of the game on a triple to center field. His second RBI of the day tied the game once again, this time at 3-3.
Garvin finished the day 2-3 with two RBIs from the plate and dealt 4.0 innings from the mound, where he allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three.
The game went tied into the fifth inning, but there the cracks in the Lakers' defense began to show. A triple from Lewiston gave them the lead, 4-3, and a passed ball helped them extend that lead to 5-3.
From there, it was like a snowball rolling downhill for North Idaho. The Lakers conceded nine runs in the final two innings, sealing the game in favor of Lewiston.

SANDPOINT — Much like the first of the day, the final score won't tell the whole story of North Idaho's loss to Lewis Clark.
Once again, the Lakers jumped on their opponent, scoring two runs in the first inning thanks to a walk from Sandpoint High's Cy Marshall and another triple from Karsen Garvin. Despite conceding the lead in the top of the second, North Idaho worked three walks to open their end of the inning to load the bases.
From there, a single from Bonners Ferry High rising sophomore Max Thompson drove in two runs to recapture the lead for the Lakers.
Lewis Clark looked sluggish to open the third but quickly found a rhythm and hit five singles in a row to the tune of a six-run inning. The response from North Idaho was steady, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to more production from Cody Gutierrez, Drake Burk and Garvin.
However, that would be the last response that the Lakers could muster. The Bucs continued to pile on, recording 21 hits in the game and scoring 11 runs in the final four innings.
The two losses leave the Lakers at a 4-12-1 record on the summer. North Idaho is back in action this weekend and is set to play five games at the Spokane Wood Bat Classic.
