Fort Sherman Chapel opens for tours
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 10 hours, 2 minutes AGO
For the first time in its history, the historic Fort Sherman Chapel will be open to the public on a regular weekly schedule, giving visitors a new opportunity to step inside one of North Idaho's most treasured landmarks.
Beginning this summer, the Fort Sherman Chapel will welcome visitors every Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is by donation and funds will go toward the preservation of this local landmark.
"The Fort Sherman Chapel is one of the most important historic buildings in North Idaho," said Britt Thurman, executive director of the Museum of North Idaho. "For generations, people have admired the Chapel from the outside, but relatively few have had the opportunity to explore its history inside."
Constructed in 1880, the Fort Sherman Chapel is one of only three remaining buildings from Fort Sherman, the first permanent settlement in Coeur d'Alene.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Chapel served as far more than a place of worship. During the military era, it also functioned as a library, lecture hall, reading room, school and gathering place for both soldiers and civilians.
Until now, the Chapel has only been accessible during guided walking tours, private events and special programs.
These new weekly open hours offer the public an opportunity to visit at their own pace and experience the building's rich history firsthand. Inside, visitors will find exhibits exploring the history of Fort Sherman, the Chapel and the soldiers and families who lived here during the late 19th century.
"We're excited to open its doors on a regular basis and give residents and visitors alike a chance to experience this remarkable piece of our community's heritage," Thurman said.
Historic artifacts and photographs help tell the story of the military post that laid the foundation for the community that would become Coeur d'Alene.
Volunteer docents from the Museum of North Idaho will be on hand during open hours to answer questions and share stories about Fort Sherman, military life on the frontier and the preservation of this beloved landmark.
The Fort Sherman Chapel is at 332 Hubbard St. in Coeur d'Alene's historic Fort Grounds neighborhood near the North Idaho College campus.
