LEGION BASEBALL: Lums finish second in pool play at Wood Bat tourney

COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen AA team bounced back from its lone loss of the tourney to beat the Spokane Valley Bombers AAA 7-3 on Saturday at Thorco Field to finish 3-1 in pool play at the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic. 

Earlier Saturday at Thorco, the Lums fell 14-2 to the Northwest 509 Stars 18U. 

Coeur d’Alene finished second in its Thorco pool. NW 509 Stars 18U went 4-0, the Calgary Premier Blues 2-2, Spokane Valley Bombers 1-3, the Athx Redhawks 18U 0-4. 

In the win over the Bombers, Malcolm MacNiven hit a solo homer in the second inning for Coeur d’Alene (10-12), and Asa Morton went 3 for 4. 

Jack Pierce hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning to give the Lums a 4-2 lead.  

Colton Nordman singled in a run in the sixth for Coeur d’Alene, and scored on a groundout. 

JD Davenport struck out seven in a complete-game win for the Lums. 

In the first game, Morton’s two-run single in the top of the fourth pulled Coeur d’Alene to within 5-2. But the Stars answered with nine runs in the bottom half.  

“Our boys are playing great Lumbermen baseball and leaving it all on the field,” Lums coach Sean MacNiven said. “We start and finish as a team. When they remember how fun the game can be is when they play their best.”

The Lums play the Expos Williamson 18U today at 2 p.m. at Thorco Field in a consolation game. The Expos finished tied for third in their pool at Brett James Memorial Field in Post Falls.
