COEUR d'ALENE — The North Idaho Lakers 16U struggled to generate offense, dropping all four of their games in the Spokane Wood Bat Classic last weekend.
South Hill 15, North Idaho 4 (5)
COEUR d'ALENE — A third-inning rally fueled by a double from Bonners Ferry High's Max Thompson wasn't enough for the North Idaho Lakers in their first game of the tournament against the South Hill Bolts on Friday.
South Hill opened the game on fire, hitting a double of their own and scoring their first run on just the fourth batter of the game. The Bolts notched eight runs in the top of the first, immediately putting the Lakers in a massive hole before their team even had a chance to swing the bat.
After the troublesome first inning, North Idaho's starting pitcher Cy Marshall returned to form. In the following two innings, Marshall struck out five batters and only gave up one more hit to give North Idaho a fighting chance. He ended the day after 4.1 innings, giving up 10 runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.
Yet the Lakers' bats were quiet until the fourth inning when Thompson smashed a double to left field, igniting the team. A single from Nixon Wholschlager and Parker Bowen walk followed to load the bases for Brent Worley.
Not only did Worley come through with a single to score the first run of the game for the Lakers, but he started a trend. Following his path, Cody Gutierrez and Marshall both found grass to drive in two more runs to cut into the Bolts' lead, 8-3.
Bonners Ferry rising sophomore Worley stole home to notch another run for North Idaho, which would be the last time a Laker would touch home plate. South Hill got back to work, scoring two more runs off singles in the top of the fourth, knocking Marshall out of the game in the fifth and keeping North Idaho at arm's length.
Gutierrez finished off the game for North Idaho, conceding five runs on two hits in the fifth inning. The game was called by run rule after a quiet bottom of the fifth for the Lakers.

COEUR d'ALENE — The North Idaho Lakers fell behind early and never recovered in their second game of the tournament against the Spokane Expos 15U on Friday.
Bonners Ferry High star Kordale Burt drove in the Lakers' lone run of the game with a double in the top of the third to score Cody Gutierrez, who walked earlier in the inning. Priest River High's Karsen Garvin and Parker Bowen also singled in the game.
North Idaho started the day with a borrowed player on the mound, who conceded 12 runs on 10 hits through just 1.1 innings. Burt finished out the game, striking out four batters, but allowed nine runs off five hits through 1.2 innings.
Spokane had a stellar day at the plate, hitting three doubles and three triples to help them drive in 16 runs on the day.

Walla Walla 16, North Idaho 5 (4)
COEUR d'ALENE — Another terrific day at the plate for Kordale Burt jump-started a shorthanded North Idaho's offense early in the Laker's loss to Walla Walla Griz on Saturday.
Burt smashed two triples in the game, with his first coming in the opening inning to drive in a run. Cy Marshall, Karsen Garvin and Burt all stole home in the inning, scoring four runs to open the game and giving North Idaho a much-needed advantage early.
However, the Lakers' time on top was short-lived as the Griz gathered three singles and a double in the bottom of the first to even the game at 4-4 with only one out. From there, they continued to pile on Garvin, who started the game for the Lakers, hitting two more singles and another double en route to a seven-run first inning.
North Idaho was sent down in order in the second inning, while Walla Walla poured on the runs. Three more singles resulted in four more Griz runs, elevating their lead to 11-4 by the end of the second.
The second of Burt's triples opened the third inning, and while he was eventually driven in on a sacrifice out by Garvin, that proved to be the final run of the game for North Idaho.
Walla Walla notched four more runs in the third and a final run in the fourth to push the game to a run-rule ending in the fourth.

Spokane 17U 13, North Idaho 1 (4)
COEUR d'ALENE — The Spokane Wood Bat Classic closed the same way it started for North Idaho with a tough loss, this time to the Spokane Expos 17U on Sunday afternoon.
Despite two quick outs for starter Noah Langlois, his day began to unravel in the first inning. A hard-hit double from Luke Reedy drove in one run, while a triple from Graysen Milsom added two more runs for the Expos to make it 4-0.
Spokane's five-run burst in the first inning was enough to push them past North Idaho, who only managed three hits in the game.
The Lakers' only run came solely from Karsen Garvin, who continued his successful weekend with a double to open the second inning. With Braden Burrows at the plate, Garvin quickly snatched third base on the first pitch before performing heads-up baserunning to score off an error on the second pitch.
Garvin would single in the fourth inning, recording a perfect 2-2 day from the plate, accounting for two of the Lakers' three hits. The other came from Cy Marshall, who singled and was caught attempting to steal second in the third inning.
The four losses move North Idaho to 4-16-1 in the summer season. The Lakers get an extended period off before jumping back into action to close out their season at the American Legion State Tournament, starting on July 16.
