The work of Kalispell artist Florance O’Neal will be on display through August 1 at Phillips Gallery in her latest exhibit titled Totems and Spirit Animals.

The Meet the Artist reception will take place on July 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery. The artist will talk about her work at 5:30 p.m.

The Totems and Spirit Animals exhibit explores the deep connection between humans and the natural world, evoking a sense of ancestral wisdom and spiritual symbolism. Drawing from ancient traditions and contemporary interpretations, O’Neal’s work reflects the idea that animals, both real and mythical, hold a mirror to our inner selves, guiding us through personal journeys and challenges.

“Each piece in this series is inspired by the profound relationship we share with these totemic creatures. They represent the untapped potential within us, embodying traits of strength, resilience, intuition, and transformation. By tapping into their essence, I aim to create a dialogue between the viewer and the spirit world, where the boundaries between human and animal are blurred, and the inner landscape is brought into sharp focus,” says O’Neal.

Through vibrant color, intricate textures, and dynamic compositions, O’Neal seeks to convey the vibrancy and power of the spirit guides. Whether it’s the regal presence of the moose in her piece titled “Wisdom Keeper,” the wisdom of the owl in her painting titled “Illuminated Wisdom,” or the protection of the bear in her painting titled “She: Medicine Bear,” each totem speaks to a unique energy that resonates with the viewer’s own journey. These three paintings are available for viewing as part of the exhibit.

O’Neal invites attendees to reflect on their own spirit animals in this collection – those guardians, teachers, and messengers who walk with you, guiding you through the labyrinth of life.

“May the images I’ve created serve as a reminder that the spirit world is ever present, and its lessons are waiting to be discovered,” says O’Neal.

A native Oregonian, Florance O’Neal has lived in New York, Washington, California, and finally Montana. Professionally, she is a psychotherapist, an artist and an intentional creativity teacher. She feels she has had the great privilege of working with people and assisting them toward achieving their goals for a happier, more satisfying life.

She has lived in the Flathead Valley since 1996, and if she is not in the office or painting, she can be found playing pickleball, hiking the beautiful country or playing with her grandchildren.
