BONNERS FERRY — America's 250th anniversary brought record crowds to Bonners Ferry on July 4 as residents and visitors filled downtown streets and the Boundary County Fairgrounds to celebrate Independence Day.

Red, white and blue lined the streets as families, friends and visitors gathered throughout the day for a parade, live entertainment, food vendors, family activities, fireworks and a celebration of community spirit.

Longtime parade announcer Mark Carpenter, who has been announcing the community parade since 2012, said this year's turnout appeared to be the largest he has seen.

As spectators waited for the parade to begin, Carpenter kept the crowd entertained with music and commentary. When Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" came over the speakers, Carpenter began singing along, prompting many in the crowd to join in. The familiar chorus echoed through downtown as families, friends and visitors sang together, setting a festive tone for the celebration ahead.

The sidewalks and streets along the parade route were packed with spectators as one of the longest parades in recent years made its way through town. Community organizations, businesses, first responders, elected officials and local families all took part in the celebration, each drawing enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

One of the day's highlights was the appearance of an authentic 1841 Mountain Howitzer cannon, which participated in the parade before moving to the Boundary County Fairgrounds. There, demonstration firings throughout the afternoon drew crowds of onlookers, adding a historic touch to the celebration.

Following the parade, the festivities continued at the fairgrounds, where community members gathered for an afternoon of music, games, activities and catching up with friends and neighbors. Children enjoyed family-friendly activities while attendees relaxed in lawn chairs, listened to live entertainment and enjoyed food from local vendors.

The celebration concluded with an expanded fireworks display that lit up the night sky over Bonners Ferry.

Organizer John Becker said the success of the event reflects the dedication and generosity of the community.

"God's truly blessed us with something special here in Bonners Ferry," Becker said. "This event is 100% volunteer organized and operated and 100% funded through community donations. There are no paid organizers behind the scenes, just neighbors, local businesses and volunteers coming together each year to create a memorable Independence Day for our community."

Becker said the event's growth is a testament to the support it receives each year.

"We're a small community and you've helped us put something together that competes with many of the larger cities around us," he said.

Organizers extended special thanks to the volunteers who spent countless hours planning and coordinating this year's celebration, including fundraising coordinator Libby Reeves, vendor coordinator Linda Lederhos, entertainment coordinator Marilyn Lorensen, parade coordinators Lucas and Charli Turner, support team members Adam Reeves and Bethany Fonda, and the Becker family, who served as fireworks and event lead organizers.

Becker also recognized the many volunteers who assisted with setup, cleanup, games, logistics, closing ceremonies and numerous behind-the-scenes tasks throughout the day.

"While not every name can be listed, your hard work did not go unnoticed, and this celebration would not have been possible without you," Becker said.

Organizers also thanked the donors, sponsors, vendors, entertainers, parade participants and community members whose support helped make the celebration possible.

As planning begins for next year's event, Becker said additional volunteers will be needed as the celebration continues to grow.

"We're already looking ahead to 2027," Becker said. "We're proud to celebrate with such an amazing community, and we can't wait to see everyone next year."
