St. Ignatius Seniors: Beware the summer heat
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 13 hours, 19 minutes AGO
Older adults are vulnerable to warm weather and extreme heat because their bodies cannot regulate temperature or sweat as efficiently as younger people. Heat-related illnesses can escalate quickly, making it important to stay hydrated, limit sun exposure, and utilize air conditioning.
To lower your risk of heat-related illness, take the following precautions: Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids including water, tea or juice. If you are on fluid restrictions, ask your doctor what to do during hot weather.
Schedule outdoor activities or exercise in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Dress appropriately; wear loose, lightweight clothing, sunglasses, use sunscreen and a hat.
If possible find a place that has air conditioning. If you do not have access to air conditioning, close the blinds during the day, open windows, use fans, limit oven use, take cool showers or sponge off with cool water. (From National Institute on Aging website)
