Small ball helped the Kalispell A Lakers defeat the Flathead A’s 6-3 Friday morning, in the first game of the annual John R. Harp Memorial baseball tournament at Griffin Field.

The tournament, which concludes Sunday, featured four games on Friday – ending with the Lakers’ 13-7 loss to the Black Gold 47s out of Beaumont, Alberta.

In between, the Prairie Cardinals out of Post Falls, Idaho, beat the A’s 15-11 and the ATHX Jr. Redhawks out of Edmonton swamped the Calgary Premier Blues 16U 17-1.

A Lakers 6, Flathead A’s 3

Jacobe Sullenger’s punt single was a big part of a three-run third inning for the Lakers: It came after Blake Paulsen stole third, then came home on a throwing error to make it 3-1; Cameron Sharp, who had walked, took third on the same play.

Sullenger’s bunt went for an RBI single and brought in Sharp for a 4-1 lead. Madden Carrier followed with a double and Dustin Gladeau’s sacrifice fly brought in Sullenger.

Paulson added an RBI single in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.

Carrier had two doubles.

The A’s loaded the bases in the fourth inning and didn’t score, then got two runs in the fifth on Tayvin Beach’s RBI single and a wild pitch. They were issued four walks in the inning and 13 in the game, which ended in the fifth for time.

Easton Corbett had two hits for the A’s.

Prairie Cardinals 15, A’s 11

The A’s (10-7) built a 9-3 lead in the top of the third inning, only to see Prairie (6-11) put up eight runs in its half to lead for good, 11-3.

Tayvin Beach’s two-run triple was the key hit in Flathead’s half of the frame; then the Cardinals sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom half. A two-run triple by Nathan Fitzpatrick was key; so were back-to-back RBI doubles from Brody McCullough and Dylan Vranich.

Jaxson Cadwell added an RBI double in the fifth for the A’s, closing the gap to 13-11; the Cardinals answered with run-scoring singles from Ashton Oliver and Sam Murphy.

Jr. Redhawks 17, Premier Blues 1

A 13-run third inning sealed this one, and the game ended in the bottom half under the mercy rule.

The Redhawks (10-29-2) saw Caleb Stejskal get three hits and three runs batted in; Declan King hit two doubles and scored three times, and Baxter Simmons had a pair of two-run singles. Jaxon Keeping added a triple and Zac Wojtas hit a double.

Lincoln Cayer had the lone hit for Calgary (23-23), an RBI single in the second.

Black Gold 47s 13, A Lakers 7

Paulson hit an RBI triple and scored on Sullenger’s grounder in the first inning for the Lakers (7-19), and John Selff’s RBI single was the big hit in a three-run second inning that knotted the score 5-5.

But Black Gold (14-16) put up four runs in the third and fifth innings to pull away. Ryder Olson and Ayden Huculak hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth to give the 47s the lead for good, 7-5, and Jace Kulyk’s two-run single in the fifth made it 11-6.

Paulson added another RBI single in the fourth for Kalispell, which committed eight errors in a miscue-filled game (Black Gold had six errors).

Olson had two doubles for the winners and ended with three hits and two runs scored.
