Sixth Street revives a galactic farce

WALLACE — If side-splitting laughter with a dose of science fiction is in your wheelhouse, Sixth Street Theater's July production, "May the Farce be With You, or.. The Empire Sings Flat," may be the perfect choice for summer entertainment.

The original production opened this week at the community playhouse, returning to the stage 12 years after its first run. Written by Sixth Street veterans and siblings Eli and Brady Bourgard — who also directed the 2014 production — the show is now in the hands of another sibling duo. Drake and Harley Duce have teamed up to bring the comedy back to life.

The production marks Drake's fifth directing credit. He also serves as vice president of the theater's board and has directed a range of productions, from westerns to holiday-themed shows. This time, he was looking for something different.

"We didn't want it to be anything too similar to what we've done before," he said. "So, we went back to a Sixth Street classic."

For Harley, who has worked with the theater in nearly every capacity imaginable, the production serves as her directorial debut. She said something was fitting about two siblings directing a show created by two brothers.

"Since it was originally written by brothers and directed by siblings, we thought it made sense for us to co-direct," Harley said.

The Star Wars-inspired spoof features a small cast that includes three newcomers making their theater debuts. The cast includes Lucille Debryshire, Sebastian Barrett, Vivyann Tiffin, Zachary Katt and Alyssa Brooks.

The story centers on Hand Model, a juvenile space outlaw bent on rescuing Princess Papaya from the clutches of the evil — and chronically short-of-breath — Dorf Vay-Dur. Joining him on the adventure are She-3PO, a droid who may be becoming a little too sentient for everyone's comfort, and Yoga, the remarkably limber keeper of the mystical power known as the Farce. Oh, and there's a montage, because every space epic needs a montage.

Both directors praised the Bourgard brothers' talent for writing quick, punchy comedy that gives every performer a chance to shine. Still, Brooks' deadpan performance as the female droid She-3PO and Barrett's turn in dual roles as Farce Master Yoga and The Priest stand out among the evening's biggest laughs.

"May the Farce be With You" delivers the same brand of broad, fast-paced humor that made Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs" a cult favorite. With "Spaceballs 2" on the horizon and Brooks celebrating his 100th birthday, the production feels almost like a tribute to the legendary king of parody.

"Star Wars parodies are on the mind," Drake said.

Accompanist Carl Rowe, a longtime Sixth Street performer, provides music for the production.

Including its accompanying musical revue, the production runs a brisk 90 minutes — the perfect excuse to escape the summer heat inside the theater's cool, dark auditorium.

The musical revue has a few hidden gems within as well. Katt anchors a spoken word version of Elton John's Rocketman that you won't want to miss.

"May the Farce be With You, or.. The Empire Sings Flat" will be performed Thursday through Sunday through Aug. 9. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are available at www.sixthstreetmelodrama.com.

Hand Model (played here by co-director Harley Duce) learns the ways of the Farce from Master Yoga (Sebastian Barrett) during the training montage.
