Edward Charles Bittner, 94, was born April 7, 1932. He passed away on  July 3, 2026.

Since coming to Sandpoint for his retirement over 40 years ago, Ed has been a champion for dogs and spent countless hours getting dogs adopted from the Better Together Animal Alliance shelter. Ed also adopted many needy dogs and loved them all dearly.

Prior to coming to Sandpoint, Ed had an illustrious career as a US diplomat. He and his family lived around the world providing the best global education possible for his two daughters, Erika and Valerie.

Ed met his wife, Leanore Richel, while attending Carnegie Tech and then transferred to Georgetown University to prepare for his career as a foreign service officer. He later attended Yale University to get a master's in economics. Ed and his family served in Switzerland, Iceland, Canada, Venezuela and Kenya.

Ed chose Sandpoint for retirement for the natural beauty and recreational opportunities. He loved to ski, hike and sail.  He also enjoyed the musical opportunities in Sandpoint and sang in the chorales at Christmas.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Erika Magill; son-in-law, Brian Magill; and his two grandchildren, Ian and Erin. He is also survived by his loving partner, Adel Williams.

In lieu of a service Ed would like donations in his name to benefit the Better Together Animal Alliance shelter.
