George Henry Leroy Dumontier, 91

Leroy Dumontier, known affectionately as “Sonny,” passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at the age of 91.

Sonny was born on May 4, 1935, in Arlee. Arlee would be his home for the next 91 years.

He lived a full life centered around hard work, family, and the land. In his earlier years, he worked for Flathead Irrigation, supporting the local valley. His true passion, however, was working his ranch and raising Salers cattle, a lifelong dedication that left a lasting mark on the local ranching community.

Sonny was a man of strong character, direct honesty and quiet strength. He was a straight shooter who believed in a hard day's work, and whether he was telling a story or offering a practical helping hand on a project, he was someone you could depend on.

He and his loving wife, Virginia, built their life side by side, welcoming two beautiful daughters, Susan and Lisa, into the world. The couple would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this coming December on the 22nd.

Together, they shared countless adventures, notably traveling with the Salers Association to connect with fellow cattlemen, even journeying as far as New Zealand.

Sonny leaves behind a strong legacy and a family who respected him deeply. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his daughter, Lisa Dumontier (Troy Zinda); his grandchildren, Katy Lytle (Pete Blair), Taylor Mullen (Nick), Karleigh Ursua (Kieran), Brianna Canning, Kori McVicker, Halle Noland (Jack), Jaidyn Herreid, and Lexi Herreid; and his five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Clara Dumontier; his sister, Leona Dunham; his brother, Cub Dumontier; and his daughter, Susan Canning.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 17, 2026, at the Arlee Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Jocko Cemetery, and a reception will be held afterward at the Arlee Brown Building at 4 p.m. for family and friends to gather and share stories.
