Man arrested in Moses Lake for drive-by shooting

MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake man was arrested in a drive-by shooting incident in the Cascade Valley area of Moses Lake Tuesday night, according to a statement from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Austin Bennett, 27, was booked into jail on suspicion of drive-by shooting, according to the Grant County Jail roster. As of Wednesday morning, he did not have a listed bail amount.
At about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday, GCSO deputies and Moses Lake Police officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 7900 block of Stanley Road Northeast, according to the statement. Investigators collected evidence at the scene, including a spent .223-caliber cartridge casing.
Witnesses told investigators that a blue Ford Expedition may have been involved, according to the statement. Officers located the SUV a short time later in the 3200 block of Arrow Street, where Bennett was detained during the investigation.
During a search of the Expedition, investigators found another spent .223-caliber cartridge casing, a .223-caliber rifle without a serial number, and a rifle magazine loaded with .223-caliber ammunition. Investigators also found a .223-caliber cartridge in Bennett's pants pocket. The Expedition was seized as evidence.
Bennett was arrested in 2018 on charges of residential burglary, third-degree malicious mischief and showing effects of alcohol, according to Columbia Basin Herald archives, and in 2020 on charges of eluding, driving while under the influence, third-degree driving while license suspended, resisting arrest and third-degree escape, as well as an outstanding warrant related to third-degree driving while license suspended and second-degree criminal trespass. Archives also show arrests for Grant County Superior Court warrants in 2023 and 2024.

Noxious Weed Control Board works to keep invasive plants under control
MOSES LAKE — Some of the nastiest plants in Grant County were the topic of a class led by Jay Johnson, a consultant with the Grant County Noxious Weed Control Board, Tuesday. The Noxious Weed Control Board, as its name would suggest, is tasked with keeping weeds under control in Grant County. That’s not a small job; the board’s website lists 129 species of noxious weeds that are found around Grant County. A noxious weed is defined as an invasive, non-native plant that threatens agricultural crops, local ecosystems or fish and wildlife habitat, according to the Noxious Weed Control Board. Washington state law requires that these weeds be identified and their spread kept to a minimum, if not completely eradicated. “We’re one of those agencies a lot of people don’t really understand,” Johnson said. “We’re a county office and … our funding is tax-based assessment. When you get your tax bill and you look down at all the expenses that you pay for, there we are.”

Moses Lake author encourages women to look beyond church culture norms
MOSES LAKE — A Moses Lake author’s book, “A Christian Woman Striving to Live Her Faith in a Man-Controlled World,” takes aim at the role to which many churches relegate the female half of their congregations. “It’s to encourage women in the faith,” Linda Curran said. “A lot of churches say, ‘Teach Sunday school, do this, do that, but don’t (evangelize.)’" In her book, Curran recounts a time when she moved to a new community and joined a church there. She was surprised to learn that, as a new female member, she had been automatically assigned church cleaning duties. When she questioned it, she wrote, she was met with condescension and her objections were brushed aside. In other churches, she said, women who were capable of teaching were relegated to “women’s ministry.”
