Post Falls is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The federal agency released the latest population numbers in the spring, detailing growth between April 2020 and July 2025. Post Falls was No. 84 on a list of almost 1,900 U.S. cities and towns with more than 20,000 residents for population growth during that period.

The population of Post Falls climbed from 38,620 residents to 46,715 during that five-year span, a 21% increase.

Three Idaho cities saw more dramatic growth. Kuna, a city in the Boise metropolitan area, ranked 38th on the list, growing from 24,096 residents to 31,525. That’s a 30.8% population increase.

Caldwell added more than 16,400 residents during the same period, a 27.4% increase, and was home to 76,629 people as of July 2025. Meridian came in at No. 78, going from a population of 118,810 people to 142,988. That’s more than 25,000 new residents and overall growth of 21.4%.

Nampa, Eagle, Idaho Falls and Twin Falls all ranked higher than Coeur d’Alene, which landed at No. 389 nationwide. The city saw a population increase of 6.5% between April 2020 and July 2025 — the same rate as Seattle, which ranked 388th for growth — climbing from 54,649 residents to 58,179. That’s a little more than 3,500 people.

Boise saw comparatively little growth during the five-year period, adding 2,707 residents, an increase of 1.1%. The city’s population as of July 2025 is 238,429 people.

While population growth slowed nationwide between 2024 and 2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, housing growth did not.

The nation’s housing stock, defined as the total number of housing units, reached 148.3 million last year, an increase of 1.4 million or 1% over 2024, almost identical to the increase over the previous one-year period.

Idaho consistently had the highest annual percentage growth in housing units across all years from 2020 to 2025. Idaho recorded a 2.1% increase between July 1 and July 1, 2025, followed by Arizona at 2% and South Carolina at 1.9%.

Kootenai County saw an increase in housing units at least 2.5% between 2024 and 2025, according to federal data, while Shoshone and Bonner counties saw increases of 1% to 2.49% during the same period.

Three of the five fastest-growing cities on the agency’s list, as well as half of the top 10 cities, were in Texas. Forney, Texas led the pack, with a population growth of nearly 79% over the five-year period, followed by Haines City, Fla. and Hutto, Texas. All three cities added more than 18,000 residents.
