Roughly an hour after announcing that a public safety power shutoff would be implemented in portions of Bonner and Boundary counties, Northern Lights has announced the Bonneville Power had canceled the shutoff.

"Please know that like you, we are frustrated by the short notice about these decisions, which limited our ability to communicate with you in a timely manner," NLI officials posted on their social media accounts. "We are grateful for our members and appreciate your patience."

The utility had announced at 4:27 p.m. that Bonneville Power Administration planned a public safety power shutoff to begin on Thursday, July 16, at 5 p.m. PST.

PSPSs are intentional and necessary outages to prevent wildfires during high-risk weather conditions. During these conditions, if sparks occur — such as those from downed lines or damaged equipment — NLI officials said the combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds significantly increases the risk of starting and spreading a wildfire in the community.

Included in the short-lived power shutoff were the Troy, Montana area; Yaak area; Lincoln County; the area rea north of Bonners Ferry to the Canadian border; Mt. Hall area; North Bench; Moyie Springs; Schweitzer Mountain; Sagle and surrounding areas; Cocolalla and surrounding areas; and areas west of Sandpoint; area north of Priest River; Priest Lake area – both sides of the lake; North of Athol.

The cooperative said that power shutoff was needed to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect local homes.
