St. Ignatius Seniors: Understanding nutrition labels
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 16 hours, 49 minutes AGO
Understanding the Nutrition Facts label on a food package begins with “Servings per Container,” which is the total number of servings in the entire package. “Serving Size” is the amount of food measured out and eaten for one serving.
“Calories” is the amount of calories on one serving of food. Daily calorie intake is based on age, height, weight and activity level. Ask your health care professional what your calorie intake should be.
Finally, “%DV (Daily Value)” is how much a nutrient in the food contributes to the daily diet. Older adults should look for foods that have high percentages of DV in fiber, calcium and vitamin D. Look for foods that have lower percentages of saturated fats, sodium and added sugars.
For more information on nutrition facts labels, go to www.fda.gov/nutritioneducation. (From fda.gov website)
