SANDPOINT — The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce has named Joan Avery as its July Volunteer of the Month, honoring her outstanding commitment to service, leadership, and community impact throughout Bonner County.

Since 2007, Joan Avery has been a steady, joyful presence at the Sandpoint Teen Center. For more than 18 years, she has shown up wherever she's needed most: cooking hot, delicious meals; stepping in to support teens when the staff is shorthanded; and spending meaningful time simply hanging out, listening and building trust, chamber officials said in announcing Avery's selection.

“We are proud to recognize Joan as our July Volunteer of the Month,” said Joan Urbaniak, chamber executive director.

Avery helped found the teen center with a clear purpose — to help keep Sandpoint kids safe.

"She knows those after-school hours, 3 to 5 p.m., can be the toughest time of day ― when kids are waiting for their parents and most are in need of a safe place to land," chamber officials said.

Avery helps turn those hours into something positive, a warm meal, a welcoming smile and a caring adult who is always in their corner.

Avery has not only helped found the Sandpoint Teen Center as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit but has also volunteered in almost every role at the organization during the last 18 years, including bookkeeper, community outreach, fundraiser, administrator, volunteer coordinator, food purchaser, cook, teen mentor and just about any task the teen center needed.

"With Joan's consistency, heart and hands-on care, the Sandpoint Teen Center is stronger, and our teens are safer and more supported," Urbaniak said.
