Grant S. Sorlie, 68, passed away July 8 at his home surrounded by his wife and two children.
Grant was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, on March 7, 1958, to Marvelle (Bovaird) and Richard Sorlie. He and his two brothers were raised in Grand Forks. Through high school and college, Grant loved theater, jazz music and ice hockey. While studying at the University of North Dakota, he learned to play the vibraphone, which became the heart and soul of his music.
Grant met his wife of 40 years, Liz Tryon, at Big Mountain. He became a certified piano technician through the National Technicians Guild, tuning and repairing pianos all over Western Montana. In the '90s, Grant also built steel drums under the direction of Ellie Mannette. On the performance side, Grant played the vibraphone, most notably with Cocinando, a Latin Jazz ensemble. He adored jazz! You could often find Grant near the water canoeing, listening to MTPR or hanging out with friends. He will be remembered for his friendly personality and weaving a good tale.
Grant felt such deep love for his immediate and extended family. He is survived by his wife, Liz Sorlie, his daughter, Blair Sorlie and his son, Miles (Kalie Lee) Sorlie; his brothers, Mark (Carla) Sorlie, Jay (Janet) Sorlie and his father, Richard Sorlie.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Marvelle Sorlie.
A celebration of Grant’s life will be held at Lone Pine State Park Visitor Center on Sept. 19 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Grant asks that you support Montana Public Radio and local musicians.
