LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes punches ticket to state
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 hours, 5 minutes AGO
LEWISTON — Jake Larcher singled to score Dane Perkl to break a 2-2 tie in the third inning for the Northern Lakes Mountaineers, who beat the Lewis-Clark Cubs 8-3 in a semifinal game in the Class A Area A tournament Saturday at Harris Field, clinching a berth to the state tournament starting Thursday in Nampa.
"Jake was huge for us today," Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. "He came in and threw the final three innings in crunch time. It's postseason baseball, and runs are hard to come by. We left some guys on base, but cashed in when we needed to."
Northern Lakes (24-6) will face Lewis-Clark today in the championship game at noon. Lewis-Clark eliminated Orofino 17-7 later Saturday to qualify for state. An if-necessary game is scheduled for 30 minutes after the championship game to determine seeding to state.
Ethan Pecor hit an RBI double later in the third inning for Northern Lakes (24-6). Perkl went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBIs and Ryker Brennan had a two-run single in the sixth for the Mountaineers.
"I was really pleased with our guys," Johnson said. "Our top three hitters (Brennan, Perkl and Larcher) had three of our nine hits. It was really good to see those guys get going."
