Richard Whited, 87, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2026, at Logan Heath in Whitefish with family at his side.

Richard was born in Kimball, Nebraska, on Jan. 10, 1939, and grew up in Carpenter, Wyoming. It was there that he attended school and developed a lifelong love of athletics. He excelled in basketball, helping his team compete at the state level, and placed in the state track meet. He also spent two years riding bulls, maintaining a perfect record during his rodeo career.

Following high school, Richard proudly fulfilled his required year of military service in the United States Army. After his service, he attended Rocky Mountain College in Billings on a football and track scholarship. It was there that he met the love of his life, Eleanor Fonner of Columbia Falls. Richard earned his degree in education, beginning a career dedicated to teaching and mentoring young people.

After graduating, Richard and Eleanor moved to the Flathead Valley, arriving just in time to witness the historic 1964 flood in Kalispell. Richard devoted 23 years to teaching, with some of his most cherished years spent at Helena Flats School. He coached many sports throughout his career, but basketball held a special place in his heart. His teams enjoyed many successful seasons, and he took great pride in helping young athletes grow both on and off the field.

Never one to sit still, Richard also farmed and worked in construction. Whether it was a small repair or building homes and garages from the ground up, he was known for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship, and willingness to tackle any project that required a hammer and a nail. Richard also had a lifelong passion for classic automobiles and enjoyed restoring and working on old cars. His mechanical talents and love of craftsmanship were evident in everything he touched.

After retiring from teaching, Richard and Eleanor enjoyed spending many winters in Quartzsite, Arizona, exploring the beauty of the desert and discovering all that Arizona had to offer. They treasured those adventures together and the friendships they made along the way.

Richard and Eleanor shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. Together they raised two children, Teri Whited and Randy (Jackie) Whited. He was a proud grandfather to Torey, Grey, Courtney (Brandon), Ian and Drew and a loving great-grandfather to Brantley and Colton. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Ford and two nephews, Tim and Rance.

There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. at 3670 Columbia Falls Stage Road. All are welcome to come and share stories, memories and some laughter. Light refreshments will be served. To send online condolences, please visit Richard's tribute page at columbiamortuary.com. Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls is caring for the family.
