Sarah Dawn (Carpenter) Johnson, 77

As of July 4, 2026, local parades became a little less cheerful. Sunset Bowling Center’s Ladies League now has a shortage of whimsy on Thursday mornings. Three separate book clubs will be missing their fellow page-turner, who gave them 25+ years of friendship and conversation. The hardest hit of all might be the SAPS group, a North Idaho spiritual sisterhood that tragically lost one of its founding members.

Sarah Dawn (Carpenter) Johnson, 77, died of a heart event while driving to perform with the North Idaho Sparklers in the Fourth of July Parade.

Auntie, as she was known to her family, was born June 23, 1949, in Minneapolis. She moved with her family to Coeur d’Alene in 1956 and graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School, North Idaho Junior College, and Eastern Washington University.

Sarah began her career as an elementary school teacher in Athol and Spirit Lake, followed by work as an interior designer. After returning to school for a master’s degree, she used her talents to change lives as a Counseling Specialist at North Idaho College’s Center for New Directions from 1992 to 2015. Her specialty was women in transition; she empowered hundreds to seek higher education, reinvent themselves, and take charge of their own futures. She was given a Women of Distinction award in the early 2000s for her dedication to and compassion for local women. She stayed in touch with many of her clients, some of whom became dear friends.

In the early 90s, she met Robert Johnson, a charming LAPD detective turned businessman, at Third Street Cantina in downtown Coeur d’Alene. Sarah and Bob were married in a surprise wedding at their home on Hayden Lake in 2001, surrounded by unsuspecting loved ones. The couple loved hosting family and friends at Gem Shores. There were times when the house was so full, grandchildren curled up in sleeping bags after a long day at the beach and slept anywhere there was free space on the floor. Sarah made sure everyone felt welcome.

Sarah’s legacy includes husband Bob Johnson; cherished sister/Bob’s trusty sidekick Lorna Carpenter; niece Kelsey Saintz (Nick) and children Elliot, Malcolm, and Violet; niece Micah Brunner (Derrick); nephew Mason Husky (Helen) and family; step-daughters Cindy Miller (Van), Linda Johnson, and Terrie Johnson; 9 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Carpenter; stepfather, Charles Gerry; step-son, Bob Johnson, Jr.; step-daughter, Laura Biedenkapp; and mother, Bernice Gerry.

Sarah’s Send-Off is at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, at American Legion Post 0143 in Post Falls, Idaho. As a tribute to her spirit of whimsy, attendees are strongly encouraged to wear costumes, silly clothing, big hats, flashy accessories, etc. (For reference, we found a photo of Auntie and her New Directions colleagues eating lunch at Tito Macaroni’s wearing penguin costumes; also, she was spookily authentic as a member of the Witches Dance in Coeur d’Alene the last several Octobers) If you get dressed and think, “Is this too much?”, it’s perfect. If you come dressed for a funeral, you’re going to stick out like a sore thumb, but we’ll still let you in.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Companions Animal Center or Special Needs Recreation, be a bright spot in a struggling person’s day, sing a happy tune at the grocery store, or join a dance troupe to bring cheer to the masses. Find some joy in every day, because you never know when it’s your last parade.
