25 years for the Mineral County Quilt Show

In 2001, a small handful of local ladies who had been quilting together elected to share their works of art at the Mineral County Fair in Superior. It started out small, with less than 60 exhibits all displayed in “school rooms that aren’t there now,” according to Sherrill Christensen, a founding member of Cabin Fever Quilters Guild. 

Although some of the founding members of the local guild have moved on, in one way or another, a few dedicated ladies remain who continue to share this timeless art.

Unlike other large quilt guilds, the Cabin Fever Quilters offer a friendly atmosphere for any skill level, even someone who has never touched a sewing machine. Women from every walk of life and numerous states throughout our beautiful country are included in the guild roster. 

This guild proves quilting is not just for retired old ladies and it is not “a dying art” as some may think. 

Guild President Katie Benson explains, “Whether you are an experienced quilter or just getting started, you’ll find inspiration, encouragement, and plenty of fun as members gather to share projects, explore new techniques, participate in workshops, and support community service efforts.” 

In the past few years, membership has shifted from a senior average age to middle age, including some who are still in their twenties. Granddaughters are asking their grandmothers and mothers to teach them, passing the torch to a new generation and bringing modern techniques and designs to the sewing table.

This year’s show entitled “Stars and Stripes Forever” not only celebrates twenty-five years for the quilt show, but even more importantly, highlights the 250th anniversary of our blessed nation. Within the racks, you will find a category of patriotic quilts, veterans from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and décor exhibiting our beautiful stars and stripes. 

One of the core programs of the Cabin Fever Quilters is to gift each veteran within Mineral County with a quilt made by members of the guild in appreciation for their military service. Over the years, the guild has given over 350 quilts to veterans. Local military who have not yet received a quilt are invited to visit the booth to add their name to the list. There will also be a public presentation on Saturday, August 1st at the quilt show and a special Veteran’s Choice ribbon.

“More than just a quilting group at a quilt show, the Mineral County Cabin Fever Quilters is a place where lasting friendships are stitched together one quilt at a time,” added Katie Benson.
