Kerrie Hershey is featured quilter for 2026 show

Cabin Fever Quilt Guild is pleased to introduce our 2026 Quilt Show Featured Quilter. Kerrie Hershey resides in Superior. She and her husband have visited Montana for over 30 years and decided to make it home in 2018. She first visited our quilt show that year and joined the guild in 2019.

When asked about her quilting life she says her love of fabric and sewing began around age 9. Her mother taught her how to use their old, black straight stitch, in a cabinet Singer sewing machine and she's been sewing ever since. She made most of her school clothes and saved babysitting money to buy fabric. 

She grew up in a small town in Northern California that had two fabric shops, and she spent lot of time in them. She remembers having buttonholes made by a lady in town since their machine couldn't do that. She saved her money and when she was 14, bought her own zig-zag machine. She sewed everything from bridal gowns, prom dresses and high school band uniforms to curtains and children's clothes. She also performed alterations, although those were not her favorite.

Her love of quilts started when her mother-in-law gave her an Ohio Rose quilt made by her mother in the 1930's. The hand-quilting was wonderful and captured her heart so much that she wanted to do that, too. She is mostly self-taught but did take a few classes to learn all about this new resurgence in quilting. She's been quilting by hand and machine ever since.

She started teaching quilting to church ladies and in 1991, with the encouragement of several friends, became a certified Quilt-In-A-Day instructor. She began classes in their home, later added a sewing machine dealership, started quilt retreats and in 2001 her dream of someday owning a fabric shop came true. She admitted, "For over 30 years my husband has supported and endured all the quilt craziness. It tends to take over your life."

Kerrie’s quilting style is pretty much traditional. She is inspired by antique quilts and confessed, "I do have a collection of those, too." She likes old designs with lots of hand quilting. She enjoys using today's colors and prints in vintage-style quilts and cherishes every part of the quilt-making process.

She has been blessed with many awards in the quilt world: Best of Show, Best Machine Workmanship, People's Choice, Small Business award and others. She has judged 4-H Fashion Revue, high school senior projects, Voc-Ed fairs, county fairs, quilt shows, taught hundreds of classes, made hundreds of quilts and collected hundreds of yards of gorgeous fabric.
