Margaret 'Margo' McCormick, 79

Margaret (Margo) Anne McCormick was born on November 26, 1946, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to John and Aileen (Conway) McCormick.
She was the granddaughter of early area homesteaders John and Mary (Dwyer) Conway of Moravia and George and Katherine (O’Gallagher) McCormick of Leonia. For the last forty years, she lived in the log house built by her Grandfather McCormick in the 1890s. She died peacefully at her home in Lincoln County, Montana, on July 9, 2026.
Raised in Coeur d’Alene, Margo attended St. Thomas Grade School and graduated from IHM High School in 1964. After two years at North Idaho Junior College, she went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Idaho. Margo taught in several elementary schools in Coeur d’Alene and then at the McCormick School, teaching K-8 in a rural one-room schoolhouse. Following her teaching career, she worked for a number of years at both Bonners Books, the perfect setting for a book lover, and the State Line where she tended bar and kept up to date on local happenings.
A voracious reader, Margo consumed books on a wide variety of subjects and a stack of books was never far from hand. She had a creative spirit which was evident in her teaching, her writings, and her love of music and the arts. She enjoyed dabbling in a variety of arts and crafts; her distinctive signature was a work of art in itself.
She had a longtime interest in politics with special concern for women’s rights, equality for all, and the protection of the environment.
Margo was preceded in death by her sister, Kath Olsen; and her brother, George. She is survived by her sister, Pat (Vance) Ekwortzell of Sandpoint; her niece, Maureen Mai of Bonners Ferry; her niece, Tricia (Ryan) Ekwortzell-Wells of Sandpoint; and her great-nephew, Dillon Mai of Bonners Ferry. She is also survived by her many friends.
Following cremation, Margo will be buried in a private ceremony at Grandview Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to an open house celebration of Margo’s life at her home on Sunday, August 9, 2026, between 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Mountain Time.
