West of Whitefish U.S. 93 work continues with Spencer Hill, Lion Mountain entry impacts

Active construction continues between Livermore Flats and Mountainside Drive on U.S. Highway 93 west of Whitefish.  

The Montana Department of Transportation and Knife River – Mountain West Division will continue roadwork through the fall of 2026, pause for the winter, and resume final activities in spring 2027. 

The week of July 27, crews will be present in the Spencer Hill Drive and Little Mountain Road area. 

Beginning next week, residents can expect additional delays on Spencer Hill Drive as roadway reconstruction continues and crews work on the shared-use path. To minimize impacts during peak travel times, construction on Spencer Hill Drive will require daily, full road closures. Each closure will begin at approximately 9 a.m. Local access will be maintained, though delays are expected. 

Special borrow, pecialized fill material consisting of well-graded sand and gravel that is hauled from off-site to meet specific requirements, and topsoil also continue to be added to US 93. Drainage pipes are being added throughout the work zone. 

The week of Aug. 3, crews will be working on Lion Mountain Loop Road to construct this approach to US 93 and drivers need to use State Park Road for the next few weeks.

Expect gravel roads and single-lane traffic control in all construction locations, with pilot cars and flaggers directing traffic. Plan for reduced speeds and delays up to 20 minutes during traffic stops. Heavy traffic volumes may increase wait times. 

Crews will be working during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday, weather and other unforeseen circumstances permitting.
