A Flathead Valley man who was already well-known to law enforcement faces more charges after a high-speed chase through Columbia Falls in the early morning hours of July 4.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Trevor Allen Berggren, 31, was stopped by a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper at the Blue Moon while driving a Ford 150 with no taillights. When troopers approached him he admitted to having no driver’s license and was acting very nervous, according to court documents.

Still, troopers were able to get a match on him and found he had a felony arrest warrant. When told to put his hands up in the air he shifted the truck into gear and took off. 

Troopers gave chase and were assisted by Columbia Falls police as Berggren drove through the city eastbound on Highway 2 about 70 mph and through the Bad Rock Canyon. He went through the red light at Highway 206 and passed an eastbound car on a blind corner in the Canyon. 

As he went through Hungry Horse he went into the westbound lane as he sped through town and up the Canyon. A trooper was able to use a precision immobilization technique on Berggren’s truck and the vehicle went off the road near the Dew Drop Inn. 

Berggren then started to run away and Columbia Falls officer Todd Hall was able to chase Berggren down on foot, warning him he would be tased if he didn’t stop. 

Berggren did not stop, was tased and then handcuffed. 

Troopers later allegedly found a pipe and about 2.5 grams of methamphetamine in his truck. 

Berggren now faces charges of aggravated fleeing/eluding, criminal endangerment, and criminal possession of dangerous drugs.  

In 2023 Berggren faced felony counts of assault with a weapon and strangulation of a partner or family member after he allegedly attacked his then-girlfriend in Kalispell. 

In that case he allegedly tried to throw a knife at the woman and strangle her. 

Ultimately it took a SWAT team to take him into custody on those charges after a standoff with police. 

He received a 5-year suspended sentence in that case, but after being paroled following drug treatment, he allegedly violated his parole on April 4 of this year after assaulting two people at the Midway Mini Mart on Highway 93.
