Kootenai County residents and families are invited to meet first responders, see the equipment they use and learn about how public safety agencies work together next week during National Night Out.

National Night Out is an annual campaign that promotes partnerships between police and the communities they serve, bringing residents and law enforcement together in positive environments. 

The event will involve more than 17,000 communities across the U.S. this year, according to the organization, including 16 cities in Idaho. Millions of people are expected to participate nationwide. 

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies will come together for the free event from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds. 

“National Night Out is one of our favorite opportunities each year to connect with the people we serve,” said Sheriff Bob Norris, who will be in attendance. 

Norris said he looks forward to meeting people and discussing ways his agency can strengthen partnerships and better serve the growing community. 

“We invite everyone to come out, meet your local first responders, ask questions, enjoy a great evening with your family and help us continue building a safer and stronger Kootenai County together,” he said. 

Attendees will have a chance to explore emergency vehicles and specialized equipment, meet first responders, watch live demonstrations and take part in interactive challenges. 

Event highlights include: 

• Free food and drinks sponsored by the Fernan Rod and Guns Club 

• K-9 demonstrations and “Jaws of Life” rescue demonstration 

• SWAT and fire combat challenge 

• Patrol, SWAT, marine, fire, EMS and search and rescue vehicles 

• Dunk tank, pizza eating challenge, face painting and more 

• Live music and entertainment 

• Community resource booths 

According to the sheriff’s office, National Night Out is a chance for law enforcement and first responders to build relationships with the people they serve. 

“From law enforcement and fire rescue demonstrations to family activities and hands-on experiences, National Night Out offers something for everyone,” said a news release published by KCSO.
