Ashworth, Ratfield hit grand slams in Glacier rout of Boise

BOISE, Idaho — Glacier had all the fireworks Tuesday evening.

Kyle Ashworth and Donovan Ratfield both hit grand slams and the Glacier Range Riders capitalized on four big flies to defeat Boise 23-4 in Pioneer League Baseball. 

After a 2-9 start to the second half the Range Riders now have won two straight after the offensive explosion. 

Boise started on the right foot in the second as William Neaves homered to center to break a scoreless deadlock. Logan Meyer added another run on an RBI double before Jacob Sisto made it 3-0 with a single to center field. 

Ashworth got Glacier on the board in the third with an RBI groundout. Then in the fourth, Jacob Steele put Glacier ahead with a three-run shot — his sixth of the season. 

In the fifth, the Range Riders took control as Tommy Rover hit a three-run blast and seven runs came home during the frame to put Glacier ahead 11-3. 

Next inning Ashworth made it 16-3 with his third homer of the season scoring Logan Beard, Steele and Rover.  

In the seventh Ratfield made it 22 straight runs for Glacier with his big fly — his sixth of the season — that brought Ashworth, Steele and Brody Capps in.  

Zach Longshore started for Glacier, going four innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He fanned six. Ricky Tibbett tossed two innings in relief, sitting down four and allowing one run on two hits. Evan Langston closed out the win with two scoreless innings. 

Glacier chased Boise starter Andrew Baker after 4 1-3 innings. He allowed eight runs on nine hits. 

The teams resumed their six-game series Wednesday. The game was not finished at press time.
