Stegner visits Cd'A for 'Do the Work;' tour

Former Idaho Supreme Court Justice John Stegner visited Coeur d'Alene recently as part of his statewide "Do the Work" tour in his independent bid for the governor's office.

“The best ideas come from listening to the people you're elected to serve," Stegner said in a press release. "Throughout my career, I wasn't beholden to parties or special interest groups. My responsibility was to the Constitution, to the law and to doing what was right. As governor, my responsibility will be just as clear: serving the people of Idaho."

Stegner is entering the race because he believes the state’s current leadership is falling short in its responsibilities to citizens.

He believes the state needs a governor willing to lead with principle rather than bending to external pressures. Running as an independent candidate, Stegner’s campaign is rooted in a simple belief: "when something isn't working, leaders have a responsibility to step up," a release said.

"Those elected to listen, solve problems and serve the people of Idaho aren't showing up the way they should," Stegner said. "And if we don't change course, we risk losing what has always made this state special. A strength like Idaho's has never happened by accident — it has always been earned. It depends on people and leaders who are willing to step up when something isn't working. I believe Idaho can do better, and I'm ready to do the work."

A lifelong Idahoan, Stegner spent decades serving the people of Idaho as an attorney, district judge and justice on the Idaho Supreme Court. 

Throughout his career, he became known for approaching every decision with fairness, humility and a deep respect for the Constitution. Whether pioneering treatment courts for the state, resolving complex legal disputes or authoring thoughtful opinions — including standing in dissent — Stegner earned a reputation for putting integrity above politics and people above partisanship.

As part of the campaign launch, Stegner for Idaho invites Idahoans interested in learning more about the candidate or the campaign to a statewide virtual kickoff on Thursday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m. MT / 5:30 p.m. PT. During the meeting, attendees will hear more about his vision for Idaho and learn how they can get involved.
