SANDPOINT — Forrest Bird Charter School senior Arayah Glines has been awarded the “Vocal Excellence” scholarship from The Festival at Sandpoint after impressing judges with both her vocal talent and personal dedication to music.
Glines earned the honor with performances of "At Last" by Etta James and "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. Judges praised not only her vocal ability, but also the emotional depth and authenticity she brought to her audition and interview.
“This year’s applicants brought an incredibly high level of talent, artistry and dedication, making the selection process especially difficult,” scholarship judge Paul Gunter said in a statement. “Her passion for music, perseverance and thoughtful perspective on the role music has played in her life reflected the spirit of this scholarship in a meaningful way. We’re excited to support Arayah as she continues her musical journey and look forward to seeing where her talent and determination take her next.”
For Glines, the scholarship represents the culmination of years of involvement in music, theater and leadership activities during her time at FBCS.
Her interest in performance began during her freshman year when she unexpectedly landed the lead role of Little Red Riding Hood in a production by Missoula Children’s Theatre. With only five days to learn the script and prepare for the production, the experience challenged Glines and ultimately sparked a lasting passion for performing arts.
Throughout high school, Glines remained active in a variety of extracurricular activities. As a member of the school’s Radio Club, she won the 2024 Radio Club School Club Roundup competition for recording the highest number of QSO contacts. She also participated in Interact Club and attended Mini RYLA, further developing her leadership and communication skills.
Glines credits much of her musical growth to her Advanced Choir teacher, Mrs. L, who helped her discover her strength as an alto and encouraged her to explore vocal ranges she had never attempted before. Through that mentorship, Glines said she gained both confidence and a deeper appreciation for music.
The “Vocal Excellence” scholarship recognizes young musicians who demonstrate outstanding artistic achievement, dedication, and potential. As she prepares for the next chapter of her musical journey, Glines will continue sharing her talent with the community this summer during Community Day at The Festival at Sandpoint.
