Bulldog baseball wins two games at state tournament

The Whitefish baseball team finished the consolation rounds of the State A-B Baseball Tournament in Polson May 28-30 with two victories before rain cancelled their last game.
The Bulldogs were defeated in their first match Thursday, falling 5-3 to Dillon. The Bulldogs moved onto consolation rounds and tallied an 11-1 victory against Columbus.
The Bulldogs came out on top again in their third game of the tournament, defeating Frenchtown 8-3. In their fourth and final game of the season, the Dogs looked to battle Billings Central to determine who would claim third place, but the game was cancelled.
The Bulldogs went into the tournament as the third North seed and ended their season 16-9 overall. The team will have a bright future as they graduate just three seniors: Reed Boyer, Tait Orme and Joaquin Gonzalez.
Dillon 5, Whitefish 3
The Beavers rallied from a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Whitefish led 1-0 on Finn Ryan’s RBI single in the first, and Carter Godsey hit a leadoff home run to spark a two-run third inning. Orme followed Godsey’s shot to left with a double; he came in on Ryan’s second RBI single.
Dillon got two runs back on Levi Stonebraker’s home run in the fourth and tied it up with Cohen Hartman’s RBI double in the fifth.
In the sixth, a walk and two errors led to the go-ahead runs.
Whitefish got two runners aboard in the seventh but Stonebraker came on in relief of starter Logan Fox with one out and closed it out.
Orme threw six solid innings for the Bulldogs, allowing six hits and three walks. He fanned two. Fox went 6 1-3 innings for Dillon; he gave up five hits and four walks, fanning five.
Whitefish 11, Columbus 1
Orme went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Whitefish defeated Columbus in elimination play.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with a six-run second inning behind RBI hits from Logan Stewart, Carter Godsey, Orme and Ryan. Godsey finished with four RBIs, while Ryan added two hits.
Whitefish scored three more runs in the fourth and added two in the fifth while taking advantage of six Columbus errors. Stewart earned the win after allowing one hit in three scoreless innings, while Gavin Knapp pitched two innings in relief.
Whitefish 8, Frenchtown 3
Whitefish stayed alive in the consolation bracket after its game against Frenchtown was suspended Friday night and resumed Saturday morning. The Bulldogs eventually pulled away behind a strong relief outing from Cullen Wallace.
Whitefish broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the third inning and later added insurance while swiping six bases. Wallace finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and also pitched 6 2-3 innings in relief, allowing two hits and two runs. Luke Dalen added two stolen bases for the Bulldogs.
