A Shoshone County man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he falsely reported being shot and later kicked a deputy during his arrest.
Douglas Vern Quigley is charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, false report of violence and resisting or obstructing officers, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in First Judicial District Court.
According to police records, deputies with the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 7:30 p.m. May 30 to a report of a shooting at a home on French Gulch Road. Quigley told dispatchers he had been shot in the right hip by a neighbor.
When deputies arrived, they found no visible injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and no evidence that a shooting had occurred. Officers who canvassed the area reported that neighbors did not hear any gunfire.
Investigators also claimed Quigley later acknowledged he hadn’t been shot after initially claiming he had. The affidavit also stated that deputies detected the odor of an intoxicating substance while speaking with him.
Authorities said Quigley resisted arrest, refusing commands and tensing his arms as officers attempted to place him in handcuffs.
He was taken to Shoshone Medical Center for evaluation. While being escorted through the hospital, Quigley allegedly looked over his shoulder and kicked a deputy in the leg.
Quigley was transported to the Shoshone County Public Safety Building after receiving medical clearance.
The charges stem from the false report and the subsequent confrontation with law enforcement.
Under Idaho law, battery on a law enforcement officer under Idaho Code 18‑915(3)(b) is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000, or both.
