Patience at the plate and another steady outing from Evan Langston was more than enough for the Range Riders on Tuesday Night at Glacier Bank Park.
Glacier drew 15 walks and scored eight runs on just four hits in an 8-2 win over the defending Pioneer League champion Oakland Ballers.
Glacier improved to 10-3 on the season and reached 10 victories faster than any team in franchise history, with the previous mark coming on June 4th, two seasons ago.
Oakland (6-7) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Tremayne Cobb scored on an RBI groundout from Jeter Ybarra, but Glacier answered immediately with a six-run inning that shifted the game.
Donovan Ratfield tied things with a bases-loaded RBI walk before Jacob Steele followed with another. Edrick Felix was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home another run before Tommy Rover added an RBI walk of his own.
Kyle Ashworth capped the inning with a two-RBI double to right field, giving Glacier a 6-1 advantage.
“We got off to a hot start in the first,” Glacier left fielder Jake Millan said. “Had a bunch of good at bats, I was glad to see us put some early runs up on the board.”
Langston settled in from there.
After allowing the early run, the right-hander worked six innings while allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts to earn the win.
“I was definitely frustrated,” Langston said of the opening inning. “I figured I was a little slow to the plate. Coaches talked me through it and we decided the best bet was to go to the slide step.”
The adjustment worked, and Langston allowed just one run the rest of the night while Glacier’s defense backed him up throughout the middle innings.
“There’s a couple balls I thought were through, and (second baseman Logan) Beard was right there,” Langston said. “That was kind of the main mindset — throw good pitches and let the defense work.”
The Ballers cut the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Cam Bufford, but Millan answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer just over the right field pole.
“I was just going up there looking for a good pitch to hit at all times,” Millan said. “Got the barrel on it and was able to sneak it out.”
The Range Riders struck out 13 times but consistently worked deep counts and forced mistakes throughout the night.
“It’s very rare to get chemistry like that,” Millan said. “We all have each other’s backs and we really look forward to coming to the field every day.”
Glacier’s bullpen finished things off late. Davis Pratt struck out five batters over two scoreless innings before Will Maynard closed out the ninth.
Langston said the atmosphere around the clubhouse has helped fuel the strong start.
“We’re having the greatest time,” Langston said. “We know every game can be your last, so we’re playing for each other.”
The series between the Range Riders and Ballers resumes Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. at Glacier Bank Park.
