Richards soars for Cats at State C meet

Maybe the sky is not the limit for Landon Richards after all.

Defying gravity in a big way yet again, Richards won the State C title in the high jump in record-setting fashion Saturday, flying over the bar at the insane height of 6 feet, 9.75 inches, topping his previous best of 6-8 on the flight, setting a new standard for Class C in the process.

A junior, Richards will be looking to break his own lofty record next season, likely competing against himself most times out again, and seven feet does not seem to be out of the question for the Bobcat standout.

Led by the efforts of Richards, who also ran a personal best time of 15.73 seconds to win third in the 110 meter hurdles, the Bobcat boys scored 24.5 team points to finish sixth in the State C meet in Laurel Thursday through Saturday.

Behind Ava White, who placed in three events, the Superior girls scored 13 team points in Laurel.

George Hanson and Gannon Quinlan did the other scoring for the Superior boys, Hanson by winning third in the pole vault (clearing 13-6) and sixth in a crowded field of quality long jumpers (marking an impressive 20-9.75), and Quinlan tied for fifth place in the pole vault with a fine effort of 12-6.

A senior, Hanson wrapped up his Bobcat career in Laurel. Like Richards, Quinlan is a junior.

A sophomore, White completed her outstanding season of track and field by recording personal best times in winning second in the 300 meter hurdles (46.06 seconds) and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.92), and also tying for fifth place in the pole vault with a best mark of 8-6.

Richards, who had cleared 6-8 in the high jump several times this season, was all alone in the competition after 6-6 in Laurel, and cleared the 6-9.75 mark on his third and final try in the State C Saturday for the new record. Coach Logan Labbe said Richards had everyone’s attention in Laurel as he went for the record.

“Landon’s record was a special moment at the meet,” Labbe said. “He had the whole stadium on the edge of their seats. He showed great composure in that moment and accomplished his goal.”

Labbe said he was impressed by his entire team and how they comported themselves in Laurel. “Very proud of all our track athletes this weekend. They all competed well and put everything they had into their events,” he said. “It was a great learning experience for some of your younger athletes. We are looking forward to next year already!”

Labbe mentioned White, Karissa Pearce, Madi Allard, Lilly Jasper, Lani Ruthford, Amarie Johnson, Tyler Mellen, all 8th -10th graders, as Bobcats to watch in the next few seasons of Bobcat track and field.

Labbe said Hanson did not quite reach his goal of winning the State C pole vault title, but that he still performed well when crunch time arrived. “He didn’t quite finish where he wanted but he also showed great composure making his third attempt at 13-6,” Labbe offered. “Most importantly George has been a great leader for this team all year.”

Hanson plans to continue his track and field career at Whitworth College in Spokane. “We are looking forward to watch him progress as a vaulter there,” Labbe said.

Labbe also praised his valued assistant coaches.

“Chris Quinlivan and April Quinlan deserve a ton of credit, they spend a tremendous amount of time with these kids and have them competing at a very high level,” he said.

Bitten by the track and field bug, several Superior athletes are planning on going the extra mile with their endeavors, Labbe said. “Gannon, Landon and Ava along with a few others are going to be doing some track this summer as well,” he said. “I know they all have big goals for next year.”
